Course on grasses (information from permaculture network)

The course will be  looking at the association of grasses and herbs growing in particular places and what these assemblages of plants can tell us about the soil, the  land use and history. We will have an introduction to plants and their characteristics, and then we will visit two sites near Durham City.  The first site will be a cemetery with a meadow with neutral soils and the second site will be a disused quarry with alkaline soils. We will be looking at the grasses and herbs growing in these two very different habitats, practicing how to identify them, and talking about the different ways they grow and disperse.

This workshop will be 1 day,  (9 to 4pm) completely outdoors, following social distancing rules and we will have up to 5 people participating.

two separate dates to choose from: Saturday 11th July and Friday 24th July   £75. Early bird promotion: if you book before the 5th July you will get 20% discount; and as a thank you to all the participants, we will do a free visit to a Durham City Local Nature Reserve with acid grassland to keep looking at plant relationships and landscapes.

Meeting point: Outside Bill Bryson Library, Durham University, Stockton Road, Durham, DH1 3 LY.
